Editing is a part of the post-production process that includes a combination of both technical and creative techniques. An editor works with raw footage of a film, choosing appropriate shots and combining them into a sequence that aligns with the vision of the director. Film editing is about assembling shots into a logical sequence. It is all about intuition, to know how the characters will portray their emotions and how the scene is going to affect the audience. A good film editor knows exactly how hours of raw footage should be cut and joined to create a complete story. It is not just about being well-versed in editing software, but also be a good storyteller. This Certificate programme in Film Editing focuses on both aspects of editing.
Film editing is an art that can make or break a film. It can be made very apparent or completely invisible to viewers, depending on the style and skill of the editor. An editor requires a firm grasp of both aesthetic and technical knowledge since they are the first ones to interact with the footage and they work closely with the director. The following chapters will take you through the origins of this art form and the history behind it, the step by step process an editor undertakes using the established grammar of film editing and digital editing software as well as the specialized techniques used in editing various kinds of scenes and films.
This introductory chapter will introduce you to the concept of editing and how it developed over years of experimentation. You will also be taken through a practical overview of the process and learn the fundamental ways in which you can transition between two shots.
It is essential to understand the kind of material an editor gets to work with and how this material can be manipulated, keeping in mind the techniques and grammar that have been developed over years of experimentation. This chapter will teach you how to tell your stories effectively and clearly through your edit.
Film editing has become widely accessible through digitization. The process has become much simpler, but the technical expertise required remains the same. An artist cannot work without a thorough understanding and mastery of his or her tools. You will be trained in three of the film industry’s most used editing software's – Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer and DaVinci Resolve.
The aesthetics of a good edit is something that you will develop over time by practicing the specialized techniques covered in this chapter. Knowing when, how and if to cut at a particular moment is essential. Different kinds of scenes also require specific techniques to be used which will be covered.
Filmmaking is a broad field which includes short format trailers and advertisements as well as non-fiction documentary films in which varied editing treatments and workflows are followed. In this final chapter you will learn the tips, tricks and workarounds you can use while editing these films.
